Croatia’s Star Luka Modric Makes History at Euro 2024, but He’s Not Done Yet

A Historic Night for Luka Modric at Euro 2024

LEIPZIG, Germany – Amidst the cheers and applause, Luka Modric stood tall, not just as Croatia’s star player but as a record-breaker. Despite receiving a standing ovation, a man-of-the-match award, and setting a new record, Modric’s demeanor reflected the bittersweet nature of the occasion.

Modric, at 38 years and 289 days old, etched his name in the history books by becoming the oldest player to score at a European Championship. His goal against Italy on Monday highlighted his enduring prowess on the field. However, this milestone wasn’t enough to secure Croatia’s position in the competition, as Italy’s Mattia Zaccagni equalized in the eighth minute of stoppage time, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The chances for Croatia to remain in Euro 2024 now rest on a series of improbable outcomes. Modric’s opening goal, a rebound in the 55th minute after having a penalty saved by Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, showcased his relentless spirit and skill.

The previous record for the oldest goal-scorer at a European Championship was held by Ivica Vastic, who scored at 38 years and 257 days old for Austria against Poland in Euro 2008. As Modric exited the field in the 80th minute, he received standing ovations from the fans, a testament to his exceptional career and influence on the sport.

During the post-game press conference, an Italian journalist praised Modric as one of the most magnificent players ever seen, urging him never to retire. Modric, moved by the sentiment, responded with humility and determination. “I’d also like to keep playing forever, but there probably will come a time when I’ll have to hang up my boots,” he said. “I’ll keep playing. I’ll continue, so I’m not sure when, we’ll see.”

Earlier this month, Modric extended his contract with Real Madrid for another year, adding to his impressive list of achievements since joining the club from Tottenham in 2012. His illustrious career includes numerous trophies, including the Champions League and Spanish league titles.

Since his debut for Croatia at age 20 in 2006, Modric has played 178 games for the national team. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is now in his fifth European Championship, with his goal against Italy bringing his total to four goals in 16 games at the tournament. Modric has found greater success on the World Cup stage, leading Croatia to the final in 2018 and securing third place in 2022.

The draw against Italy, marked by the last-minute goal, almost certainly signals Croatia’s exit from Euro 2024. Reflecting on the match, Modric said, “It was very stressful. We kept fighting like lions right to the end. But football is cruel. Sometimes it brings a lot of happiness, but sometimes it makes you very sad as well.”

Despite the heartbreak, Modric took solace in the team’s performance and spirit. “We gave everything for Croatia, and this is how Croatia presents itself, regardless of the cruelty of this result. We deserved more, but it’s football,” he remarked. “We can be proud of how we represented Croatia.”

Luka Modric’s journey continues, and while the future remains uncertain, his legacy is firmly established, inspiring future generations with his dedication and excellence on the field.
